Ron Rash, a professor of Appalachian cultural studies at Western Carolina University and the John Parris Distinguished Professor of Appalachian Studies in the Department of English, has been named the winner of the 2020 Sidney Lanier Prize for Southern Literature. The prize is administered by Mercer University’s Spencer B. King Jr. Center for Southern Studies and is a recognition of the 19th-century poet’s long tradition of writing about the South. The prize is given by faculty nomination.
The 2022 Judith Wright Poetry Prize and the Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize have been won by Australian writers. First place ($2500) went to Claire Kotlarczyk for ‘Camperdown Grief Junk’ and second place ($1500) was for Yeena Kirkbright’s ‘New Terms for Timeless Behaviours.’ The judges of the prizes were from Overland magazine.

The foundation invites submissions of book (nonfiction), newspaper journalism (story, series or multi-media; print and online), magazine journalism (longform; print and online), broadcast journalism (television, radio or podcast; at least 20 minutes in total package length) and opinion/analysis journalism (commentary and analysis in any medium). The foundation also offers a monthly Sidney Hillman Prize for reporting on racial justice. The call for nominations will close on January 15, 2024.
