The Sydney Prize and the Sidney Prize

The Sydney Prize is an award that honours those who work hard toward their dreams. Winners receive financial assistance and prestige, as well as a commitment to use their accomplishments to promote science. Often, they will work to educate the public about the importance of scientific fields like biology or medicine. They may also work to develop new technologies that will benefit humanity in the future.

This prestigious award is named after American philosopher Sidney Hook, who was a Phi Beta Kappa member. The award was established in 1991 and is awarded at the Society’s Triennial Council Meeting. The winner is chosen based on national distinction in scholarship, undergraduate teaching, and leadership in the cause of liberal arts education.

Each year, the Sydney Prize is awarded to a nominee who has promoted “peace with justice”, human rights and non-violence. The winner is a human rights activist who has made significant contributions to peace in the world and whose actions have been an inspiration for others. This year, Nazanin Boniadi has won the Sydney Prize for her efforts to help turn outrage into action on behalf of women’s rights and human rights in Iran.

The Sidney Prize is an award given each year to writers whose pieces have had a significant impact on our world. It is bestowed by New York Times columnist David Brooks, and past winners have included Hilton Als on Haitian debt and Ed Yong on student hypersensitivity. The Sidney prize is a great way to honor those who write long-form pieces that advance our knowledge of the world.
