Hong Kong prize is a recognition scheme that is awarded to citizens who have contributed in their own ways to the fight against crime. The scheme was introduced in 1973 to honor individuals who have rendered positive assistance to the police either by reporting or helping with investigations or in the apprehension of criminals. The aim is to encourage people to report crimes or act as witnesses. In addition, the prize money aims to motivate people to continue their contributions. The award is given by the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce and the Police Force.
The Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Prize, sponsored by the Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited, has attracted record numbers of applications from universities, researchers, innovative enterprises and the public for its 2022 edition. This year, HKUST researchers pocketed six Special Awards and 28 Gold Medals with Congratulations of Jury – the highest number ever – for their work on artificial intelligence, life and health, new materials and energy, and advanced manufacturing.
In the visual arts, Pakistani artist Noormah Jamal was also a finalist for her painting Did the Seed Grow? The acrylic-on-canvas piece depicts two figures with vacant expressions sitting on a brick wall, a fire burning in the background. Another of the finalist, Hong Kong artist Michelle Fung, won the Vogue Hong Kong Women’s Prize with her mixed media artwork Red Bean Stalk.
Among the other prizes, the HK Film Award for Best Picture went to Ten Years. This controversial movie, which was nominated for the prestigious Golden Globe, caused outrage in Beijing, leading major Chinese-based TV channels to pull the plug on its broadcasting in mainland China. Its director, Ng Ka-leung, was unfazed by the criticism and vowed to keep making films that reflect the local culture and society.
The Hong Kong SAR Government expressed its strong disapproval and firm opposition today to the ministries of foreign affairs of France and Germany for issuing a prize to Chow Hang-tung while her case is under investigation. The government urged the foreign countries to respect and abide by international law and basic norms that govern the conduct of global relations, and refrain from interfering in our internal affairs. Hong Kong is a society underpinned by the rule of law, and those who break the law will be held accountable.
